Eat Your Words
Eat Your Words
Are you tired of asking your friends and family having to read out the restaurant menu? If so, LOOK has started the Eat Your Words Campaign which they would like you to be apart of.
We have produced Eat Your Words Business Cards for you to leave in restaurants that don’t have large print and Braille menus. The Business Cards call for restaurants to take action and make their menus accessible. You can help the campaign to grow and make a difference all across the country by leaving a card at the end of your meal (with or without a tip if you desire)
If you would like Eat Your Words new business cards to give out, please print out the following file or call the LOOK line. Eat Your Words Business Cards
The Eat Your Words Story
I was out with my girlfriend the other day. You know the sort of thing. I wanted to take her for a lovely meal being the nice romantic guy I am!
I am blind but my girlfriend Sally, is sighted.
So, we got to the venue and I asked for a Braille menu, as I have done many time before.
I was met, as usual with a wall of silence and could tell that the waiter was nervously shifting about, probably folding his arms and looking embarrassed. This isn’t too bad, normally, they just laugh nervously and say to my wife: “You’ll help him won’t you?”
Sometimes they go off, saying, I’ll go and get the manager, as if the manager is suddenly going to magic a menu out of thin air!
So, the manager comes to out table and stands there looking awkward like the waiter just did and now everyone on the tables around us are having a look to see what all the fuss is about.
And then, my wife, who was supposed to have been taken out for a romantic meal is looking at me and saying “Oh Paul, now look what you’ve done!”
And so, the person feeling awkward is me and I only asked for a flipping Braille menu!
The embarrassed manager always intends to “get something done” but then forgets you and me when we leave and doesn’t know what to do next anyway.
Now imagine that scene being repeated hundreds, possibly thousands of times a week as we blind and partially sighted people go to eat out at cafes, restaurants and bars, asking for accessible menus.
Imagine too how much worse this situation would be if you’re a young person in a restaurant not wanting to draw attention to yourself.
Are you like me? Feeling like you are making too much fuss? Do you feel embarrassed at having to rely on others to read menus for you?
Well, there is a project ‘Eat Your Words’ launched by LOOK which you may be interested in becoming involved in.
As a result of this scheme, you may well find that next time you go out to eat, you will be offered nice new menu, in the tight format; the restaurant will get more customers and a better reputation; you can order what you want, on your own and everyone is happy…Job Done!
