The Right to Read Film
Three million people in the UK are being denied the right to read on a daily basis just because they have a sight problem or print reading disability. Over 20,000 blind and partially sighted children’s educat
ion is being affected by not getting textbooks in a format they can read. Most books published in the UK never become available in large print, audio or Braille. This is a call to action for you, the recipient of this film, to spread the word by contacting; your MP, favourite author, publisher, book shop or library. Have your voice heard and request recorded. The Right to Read Film
Children and young people with a visual impairment across the whole country (as part of LOOK, Action for Blind People and Nystagmus Network) worked together to write and produce a fun and educational short film on the ‘Right to Read’ campaign. Their message is simple, “Same book, same time, same price”! “You can make the change, you don’t have to be a hungry bookworm anymore”. “Help find the keys to lock our books”. A LOOK production www.look-uk.org as part of the Right to Read Alliance. Music by Paul Hopkins, Filmed by BigByte TV
Hello, my name is Henry Foulds. I have Nystagmus. Me and other children and young people with the same eye condition went to the Open day of the charity supporting those affected by Nystagmus “The Nystagmus Network’s” Open Day in London during early October last year. The youth activities of the day were ran by LOOK and were supported by Action for Blind People. We decided to base our project on The Communication Celebration as it was the bicentenary of Louis Braille last year. As it was the Communication Celebration – we thought about the Right to Read campaign, to get every book published in Standard print available in Braille, Audio, Large Print and Moon. We decided upon the idea of having a movie. The movie – directed by, starred in by and about young people with a visual impairment. It is available here, online and on DVD. We have less than 20 prototype hard copies of the film (please help us consider how fund a major production) to show it to a wider audience, MP’s, libraries, schools, to publishers and to authors, so in the meantime please send this link to as many people as you can .
From the film we want people to know what people with a visual impairment want and need to access information and to make a change. A right that all should have. That movie is what your about to watch right now. I hope you enjoy it – from all that helped create the movie. And to end. SAME BOOK, SAME TIME, AT THE SAME PRICE!
Henry Foulds, 13 years
